A silent film that says a lot!
This extraordinary post WWI silent film shows how US Army Soldiers are equipped and trained for chemical warfare. What is interesting from this film is to see how little the equipment, training and procedures changed over the years from the time this film was made until today. The film shows how a soldier dons and clears his mask. It goes on to explain the organization of the chemical units found in a typical US Infantry Division during the years between WWI and WWII. Film footage from WWI shows the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in action on the gas clouded battlefields of the First World War. 70, 752 American Soldiers were gas casualties during WWI. This rare footage provides a detailed glimpse into the WWI chemical warfare battlefield and how the troops protected themselves and their animals from deadly mustard and chlorine gas attacks. YES, horses -- used to pull artillery and heavy equipment -- had to have gas masks too!
